WIA and WWLF Launch Telecom Trailblazers Initiative to Inspire Girls in Telecom

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA) and the Women’s Wireless Leadership Forum (WWLF) today announced the launch of Telecom Trailblazers, an initiative to encourage STEM learning, teach young women about digital infrastructure and inspire them to pursue careers in telecommunications.

Telecom Trailblazers’ programming will be carried out in partnership with IGNITE Worldwide, a non-profit dedicated to achieving gender equity in STEM by connecting girls with STEM opportunities during the school day. The initiative will offer fun, hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematical challenges to promote STEM learning, confidence, and identity in girls, with the goal of sparking interest in telecom and broadband infrastructure.

“We are excited to launch Telecom Trailblazers to help more girls get curious about STEM and to see themselves in the telecom industry,” said Lynn Whitcher, President of WWLF. “Our goal is to encourage budding scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians to dream of a connected world and see themselves as the innovators who will usher in a modern, connected society.”

“There is a whole world of opportunity in the communications industry as we move towards a more connected future,” said Patrick Halley, WIA President and CEO. “I’m proud to support WWLF with this groundbreaking initiative to help more girls get excited about their future and to see themselves as the builders and innovators who will help us enable connectivity everywhere.”

Telecom Trailblazers is supported in part by funds raised by the WIA Foundation through its annual Wireless Women’s Leadership Luncheon—an event which celebrates, recognizes, and empowers women in the wireless industry.

The initiative’s programming will seek to inspire female students with the unlimited potential of smart communities and the power of connected technology. Students will participate in AR/VR simulations, build mock cell sites and engage in other activities to build confidence and spark their interest in the telecom field.

Programming for the initiative will kick off in March of 2024, with the first event slated for March 12 in northern California at Verizon Innovation Labs. Further events will be announced throughout the year targeting rural and underserved schools across the country.
